Lehigh splits on final day of Lancer Spring Classic

FARMVILLE, Va. – Day two of the Lancer Spring Classic played out similarly to day one for the Lehigh softball team. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a tightly-contested 2-1 victory over Ohio Sunday morning at Lancer Field. Once again however, Lehigh had to settle for a split as Mountain Hawk pitching yielded 14 runs and 15 hits in a 14-2 loss to host Longwood in five innings. With the split Lehigh is now 2-2 on the season.
Lehigh jumped in front of Ohio with two runs in the top of the first inning as sophomore Jen Colquhoun doubled home freshman Kristen Mitchell for the game’s first run and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Brown and White up 2-0.
Senior Tiffany Curtis kept the Bobcats at bay until Emily Wethington led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to right center to cut Lehigh’s lead to one.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ohio threatened putting runners on first and second with one out. Curtis got Caitlin Colvin to pop out to second base, and after an intentional walk to Wethington, Melissa Bonner grounded out to second base to end the game.
Curtis moved to 2-0 on the season, allowing a run on seven hits. She walked two and struck out five. Colquhoun finished with two of Lehigh’s four hits. Colvin was dealt the loss for Ohio.
In game two against Longwood, Brooke Short put the Lancers in front in the top of the first with a solo home run off Lehigh junior Bri Gaumer, but the Mountain Hawks answered in the bottom of the first when freshman Rosie Roessel singled, stole second and came around to score on an error by Maggie Margadonna.
Longwood broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the third inning. Margadonna atoned for her error with a RBI single that put the Lancers up 2-1. The Lancers added seven more runs in the frame capped by a two-out grand slam to right field by pitcher Briana Wells off freshman Becca Bliss.
Lehigh picked up its second run in the bottom of the third as sophomore Julie Fernandez singled to score classmate Audra Wood, but Longwood scored four more runs in the fourth on home runs by Nichole Simmons and Brittney Latka; and another in the fifth on Wells’ second home run of the game.
Wells also stymied Lehigh in the pitcher’s circle allowing just one earned run on five hits. Gaumer took the loss for Lehigh, allowing six runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Bliss allowed eight runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings of work. Simmons and Margadonna led the Longwood attack with three hits apiece.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Lehigh will face South Dakota at 11 a.m. and Butler at 3 p.m.
