Lehigh splits on first day of Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Lehigh opened up its spring break trip to Florida by splitting a pair of games Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games. Senior Tiffany Curtis picked up her third victory of the season as the Mountain Hawks won their first game of the day 6-3 over South Dakota. Sophomore shortstop Jen Colquhoun hit her second home run of the season in the nightcap, but it wasn’t enough as Lehigh fell to Butler 7-3. With the split Lehigh moves to 3-3 on the season.
Curtis went the distance in the circle against the Coyotes allowing just three solo home runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking three. Offensively, Lehigh pounded out six hits, with junior Julie Fernandez accounting for two of the six. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning the Mountain Hawks rallied for four runs, including a bases-loaded two-run single by freshman Liz Lucas to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-2 advantage. Junior Carly Potock drove home a run with a fielder’s choice, and after South Dakota pulled within two on a home run in the top of the sixth, Fernandez tacked on an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to account for the three-run margin.
In Sunday’s second game, Lehigh bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to lead 3-2 after three, but Butler plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and never looked back. In the top of the third, Fernandez doubled home sophomore Audra Wood and Colquhoun followed with a two-run home run to put the Mountain Hawks in front. The Bulldogs capitalized on three Lehigh errors in the fourth to score four runs off freshman Rebecca Bliss. Butler added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Erin Jackson, and Jenny Esparza came out of the bullpen to keep the Mountain Hawks off the scoreboard in the final four frames. Esparza tossed four innings of no-hit ball, striking out nine of the 13 batters she faced to earn the win in relief.
Bliss (1-2) was dealt the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on ten hits in four innings. The freshman struck out two and did not walk a batter, before giving way to Gaumer, who allowed a run on three hits in two innings.
The Mountain Hawks continue action at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday with two more games. Lehigh will face Sacred Heart at 9 a.m. and Bryant at 11 a.m.
