Mountain Hawks are ready to head to Florida

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will take its second road trip of the season as it heads down to the Sunshine State for five games in four days. The Mountain Hawks will be competing at the RussMatt Invitational in Davenport, Fla. against Butler, St. Bonaventure, Fairfield, Miami (Ohio) and Sacred Heart. Lehigh started the season 1-3 last weekend at the Hughes Bros. Challenge in Wilmington, N.C., defeating the Seahawks in its season opener.
The Brown and White were able to rally and defeat UNC Wilmington 5-4 last Friday night to win its first season opener since 2005. Junior Brendan McGaheran knocked in the game-winning run in the eighth inning to give Lehigh the victory. The Mountain Hawks lost their final three games in close decisions to Liberty once and Morehead State twice.
Junior Billy Goldman has been Lehigh’s most consistent hitter as he is batting .529, with nine hits and three RBIs. His classmates Andrew Russell and McGaheran are tied with him for the team lead in RBIs (three). Freshman Alex Jacquez, the Patriot League’s reining Rookie of the Week, had a good start to his collegiate career as finished the weekend batting .375.
Senior Ken Longernecker picked up the Mountain Hawks only win of the season as he pitched three scoreless innings against the Seahawks. His classmate Andrew Berger had a good first outing, but earned the no-decision against UNC Wilmington.
Lehigh will kick things off with a game against Butler on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will face St. Bonaventure and Fairfield on Monday followed by Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday.
