Lehigh upended by Miami (Ohio) 14-3

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Lehigh baseball team suffered its fourth setback in Florida, as it lost to Miami (Ohio) 14-3 Tuesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational. The Mountain Hawks recorded their only runs of the game in the first inning and couldn’t keep the RedHawks off the board as they scored runs in seven of the nine innings. Lehigh falls to 1-7 on the season and Miami (Ohio) improves to 3-7.
“We did a nice job of jumping out to a lead, but they brought in a reliever in the second inning and he did a nice job changing speeds to keep us at bay,” head coach Sean Leary said. “They’re an excellent team that played well today and just executed better.”
Junior Sean Killeen got Lehigh’s offense going in the top of the first as he doubled in his classmate Logan Winchester. Jim McConlouge singled in Killeen and Joe Conaway finished up the Mountain Hawks scoring for the day as he knocked in McConlouge.
Miami (Ohio) evened things up in the bottom half of the inning as it responded with three runs and than it’s pitching took over. Sophomore Joe Neff came into pitch in the top of the second for the RedHawks and he held Lehigh scoreless for six innings, only allowing one hit. Seniors Jamaal Hollis and Kyle Donawerth came in and each pitched an inning to secure the win.
The RedHawks did their most damage in the seventh and eighth innings as they got a total of six runs. In the eighth, freshman Kevin Bower blasted a three-run home run down the right field line to bring the score to 14-3.
Junior Kevin Mihalik (0-2) took the loss for Lehigh as he allowed seven runs in six innings of work.
Leary knows tomorrow’s game in the Sunshine State is very important, “It’s important to play better and compete at the level I know we’re capable of. The entire team wants to come home with a win.”
Lehigh will play its final game of the RussMatt Invitational Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. vs. Sacred Heart.
