Lehigh tripped up by AU in back-and-forth affair

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lehigh suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday as the Mountain Hawks fell to American by a score of 17-16. Junior Allison Thomas scored four goals for the Brown and White, while Lauren Dykstra, Lauren Murray and Inneke Carmola netted three scores apiece but it was not enough as Lehigh falls to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League. Emily Stankiewicz tied Thomas with a game-high four goals as the Eagles improve to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Dykstra led Lehigh with six shots on the afternoon, while Thomas and Murray were credited with four apiece. Freshman Kenzie Dambach led the Mountain Hawks with four ground balls and Dykstra was a team-best four draw controls. Alissa Hardiman caused two turnovers on the day and freshman ML DiNisco made nine shots in goal before giving way to senior Kelsy Ferris, who sent back two shots in 18 minutes of work.
Stankiewicz was credited with a team-high five shots for the Eagles and Emma Larkin and Laura Dawson scooped up three ground balls each. Stankiewicz won four draw controls to lead the Eagles and Larkin caused a game-high four turnovers. In goal for the home team, Kaska Komosinski stopped one shot in 40 minutes of action while Frankie Solomon made two saves in 20 minutes.
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Lehigh with Emily Burton scoring the final goal of the run with 22:37 on the first half clock. The Mountain Hawks responded with a 4-0 run of their own as Anna Patterson, Meg Kelly, Thomas and Murray scored for Lehigh to tie things at four with 15:36 to play before halftime.
Two straight scores by AU put the home team in front 6-4, but Dykstra and Carmola answered for the Brown and White to knot things at six with 9:20 remaining in the half. Chiara Speziale gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead with 7:12 to play, but Kelly Draper and Murray scored the final two goals of the half to send the Mountain Hawks into halftime with an 8-7 lead.
Brit Ferguson scored the first goal of the second half just 27 seconds in on a free position shot to tie things at eight, but Dykstra answered with a goal at the 26:51 mark as Lehigh went back on top 9-8. Stankiewicz tied things yet again, this time at nine with 26:22 to go, before Murray and Carmola netted back-to-back scores for Lehigh to put the visitors on top 11-9 with 23:29 remaining.
The Eagles ripped off the game’s next three goals, including one from Speziale with 18:52 to go, as American regained the lead at 12-11 but Thomas tied things at 12 with her goal at the 18:02 mark. Stankiewicz then gave American a 13-12 lead with her goal at the 17:15 mark, but Thomas had an answer one more time as she tied the game at 13 with 15:46 remaining.
American went back on top with a score from Amanda Makoid with 15:13 to play but Lehigh responded with goals from Dykstra and Carmola to take a 15-14 lead with 13:12 to go. The Eagles refused to go away however as they surged on top with three straight scores, including Bernadette Maher’s with 10:29 remaining to take a 17-15 lead. Thomas scored her fourth and final goal of the day with 4:33 to play and Lehigh crept to within a single goal, but that was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get as their eight-game win streak was snapped.
Lehigh will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks host the Marist Red Foxes at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 3:30.
