Lehigh downs Bucknell 13-2 in Lewisburg

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened its 2010 Patriot League schedule in style on Friday evening as the Mountain Hawks downed Bucknell 13-2 behind three goals apiece from Kelly Draper, Lauren Dykstra and Megan Kelly. With the win Lehigh remains unbeaten at 5-0, which is its best start since the 1985 season. Bucknell falls to 1-6 following the loss, including an 0-1 mark in the Patriot League.
“I thought this was a good team effort,” Mountain Hawks head coach Jill Redfern said afterwards. “A lot of people played well for us. Megan Kelly played well, Leigh Ann Torcivia played well, Lauren Dykstra had a strong game, Kelly Draper was solid and Kindall Healy gave terrific effort.” She continued, “The weather conditions weren’t great, but we handled them very well; they were a non-factor. And defensively to hold them to two goals is an outstanding job. I thought we executed the game plan very well, we played together and we really got what we needed from our attack.”
Lehigh outshot the Bison 27-11, including 20-6 in the opening half. Junior Allison Thomas led the Mountain Hawks with seven shots, while Dykstra was credited with six. Lehigh was solid once again with its free position shots, converting 4-of-8, and the Mountain Hawks scooped up 13 ground balls led by Torcivia’s three. Lehigh caused ten turnovers on the night and won 11 draw controls with freshman Julie McBrien leading the way with three. Freshman ML DiNisco received her second straight start in goal and stopped four shots in 50 minutes of work before giving way to senior Kelsy Ferris.
Bucknell committed 18 turnovers on the evening and caused just three. Michelle Milot and Allie Mongan won two draw controls each, while Alyssa DeLorenz scooped up four ground balls and stopped eight shots in goal.
Lehigh got off to a great start, scoring a goal just 53 seconds into the game when Kelly found the back of the net. Draper added her first score two minutes later and six minutes after that Kelly made it a three-goal lead for the Mountain Hawks. Draper then scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute and with 19:50 to play before halftime the Brown and White was in front 5-0.
Dykstra then found the back of the net two straight times to make the margin seven and Healy got into the act with a free position goal with 7:25 on the clock, making it an 8-0 game. Ryan Gribbon finally got Bucknell on the board with 6:54 remaining, but Dykstra added one more before halftime and Lehigh took a 9-1 lead into intermission.
Thomas opened the second half with her seventh goal of the season to put Lehigh on top 10-1 and Kelly followed with her third score of the night as the Mountain Hawks opened up a ten-goal advantage. Thomas and Torcivia closed the scoring out for Lehigh, which won for the third time this season on the road.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks travel to Connecticut to take on Fairfield. Game time is slated for 3:30.
“That is going to be a great game for us,” Redfern said. “We’ll be put to the test on the road, which is what we need.”
