BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team was honored for its work in the classroom with a 2009-10 NSCAA Academic Award on Wednesday. Awards are presented to those college soccer squads posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.“I'm extremely proud of the team's commitment to academics,” said head coach Dean Koski. “This team award is evidence of the value we place in their academic experience.”
The Mountain Hawks posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.14 during the last academic school year. They are one of only 194 men's soccer squads nationally (across all levels) to be honored. This includes all of Division I, II and III.
Senior goalkeeper Jonathan Nydell recently garnered an individual academic honor, being named to the first ever Patriot League All-Academic Team last week. He owns a 3.36 GPA as an Engineering Physics major and Spanish minor. He stared 55 of Lehigh's 70 games over his four-year career and finished his senior season with a 1.02 GAA and .778 save percentage.
Lehigh is one of only 124 schools in the nation to have both its men's and women's soccer programs recognized.
The Mountain Hawks wrapped up their season last weekend with their second straight Patriot League Tournament appearance. Lehigh finished second in the regular season standings, including a five-game unbeaten streak in league play. The squad also posted impressive wins over Rutgers, Furman and eventual NCAA Tournament qualifier Princeton.
