BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second consecutive week men’s soccer players Adam Welch and Austin Decker were honored by the Patriot League. On Monday the league announced that Welch was named Defensive Player of the Week and Decker was named Rookie of the Week. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a week where they tied Penn State 1-1 and defeated defending league champion Colgate 2-1.
Welch had another great offensive week for Lehigh contributing in both of its games. With less than three minutes remaining against the Nittany Lions, Welch notched his first goal of the season to tie the game at one in a big road game for Lehigh. On Saturday night against the Raiders he set up Decker with a perfect pass for Lehigh’s first goal of the game.
Welch’s strong play also garnered him an accolade from the ECAC where he was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
The senior defender now has one goal and three assists on the season to lead all Lehigh defenders.
Decker continued his great freshman season by scoring his team leading fourth goal of the season against Colgate. The forward now has eight points which is also leading the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh, now 4-2-2, will hit the road Tuesday to take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. The Knights hold the all-time series lead 6-3-1 and are coming off a 3-2 victory over the Brown and White last season.
Fairleigh Dickinson heads into Tuesday’s matchup with a 3-4 record and after starting the season 2-0 the Knights have gone 1-4 since. Sophomore Paul King and freshman Dominic Reinhold lead FDU with three goals apiece this season.
