Mountain Hawks down tough Drexel squad on road

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh ran its winning streak to six games on Monday after defeating Drexel 11-6. Freshman Kelly Draper scored twice, while sophomores Allison Thomas and Lauren Dykstra also found the back of the net twice, as Lehigh registers its most consecutive victories since the 1985 season. The Mountain Hawks record now stands at 8-3, while the Dragons fall to 7-2.
Lehigh out shot the Dragons 25-19 on the afternoon, including 15-7 in the second half. Draper was the team leader with five, while Thomas and Sara MacIntyre were both credited with four. Thomas, Dykstra and Draper each won three draw controls and Dykstra, Sarah Fudin and Kelsy Ferris all had three ground balls. Fusin also caused a pair of turnovers, while Dykstra caused six. Ferris finished with three saves in goal and Draper led the Brown and White with a pair of assists.
Becca Drylie-Perkins led the home team with a pair of goals and four shots, while Kimberly Kabernagle scooped up three GBs. Josie Haller caused three turnovers and Nicole Musto handed out a pair of assists.
Draper scored the game’s first goal 3:34 in, but Drylie-Perkins tied things at one less than four minutes later. The Mountain Hawks responded with four straight goals, including one each from MacIntyre, Draper, Lauren Murray and Dykstra. That gave the Brown and White a 5-1 lead with 10:04 remaining before halftime.
Katie Lawson put a momentary stop to Lehigh’s offensive run with a goal at the 5:57 mark, but Thomas scored on a free position shot with 4:08 left in the half, putting Lehigh back up by four. Ali Allen scored with just ten seconds to go however, sending the teams into halftime with the Mountain Hawks ahead 6-3.
Thomas opened the second half with her second score of the game to give Lehigh a four-goal advantage. Two straight scores by Drexel brought the Dragons to within two scores at 7-5, but Lehigh scored the game’s next four goals, including one from Draper, Inneke Carmola, Dykstra and Meagan Tenety to go up by an 11-5 count. Charlotte Wood scored with 2:50 to go for Drexel, but it was too little, too late as the Mountain Hawks won their sixth straight.
Lehigh is back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks head to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders. Game time is set for noon.
