Torcivia's heroics lift Lehigh to 11-10 OT win

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Freshman Leigh Ann Torcivia scored at the 2:43 mark of overtime to lift Lehigh to a dramatic 11-10 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon in Maryland. Each team scored a goal in the final 30 seconds of regulation, including the Mountaineers’ Kelly Taylor who found the back of the net with one tick to go, which forced the extra session. Sophomore Allison Thomas netted a team-high four goals for the Mountain Hawks, while Kelly Draper added a pair of scores as Lehigh remains unbeaten at 2-0. Ashley Johnson scored three goals for Mount St. Mary’s which falls to 0-1 following the loss.
Lehigh out shot the Mountaineers 27-26 and scooped up 23 ground balls compared to the home team’s 22. Lauren Dykstra led the Brown and White with four ground balls, while senior Sarah Fudin scooped up three. Thomas caused two turnovers, while Kelsy Ferris stopped six shots in goal.
The Mount was 0-for-8 on free position shots and was led by Jackie Kearney and Kristin Jones with three ground balls apiece. Brigid McTavish stopped 12 shots in 66 minutes of action in goal, while no Mountaineer had more than one assist.
Johnson put the home team up 1-0 at the 26:45 mark of the opening half but Thomas answered with her first score 23 seconds later. The Mount took a 4-1 lead after scoring the next three goals, but Inneke Carmola netted her first score of the season with 15:55 left in the half to cut the deficit in half. A Breana Waraksa gave the Mountaineers a 5-2 lead with 11:52 left before halftime, but Lehigh unleashed a 4-0 run the rest of the way to surge in front and take a 6-5 lead at the break. Thomas scored twice, and Lauren Dykstra and Lauren Murray both scored once during the outburst.
Draper opened the second half with her third goal of the season to take a 7-5 lead, but two straight goals by Mount St. Mary’s tied things up at seven. Sara MacIntyre took a feed from Carmola at the 9:50 mark to give Lehigh the lead back, but Jen Semler tied the game yet again for the Mount, while Katelyn Catanese’s goal at the 4:08 mark gave the home team a 9-8 advantage. Thomas tied the game at nine with 1:34 to go and Draper put the visitors in front 10-9 with only 27 ticks remaining. Taylor then sent the game into OT but Torcivia’s heroics won it for the Brown and White.
Lehigh now has one week off before returning to action on Sunday, March 1 when the Mountain Hawks travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to take on the Boston College Eagles. The opening draw control is set for 5:00.
