Lehigh holds off FDU for first spring win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh picked up its first win of the spring season on Sunday by edging out a 4-3 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks captured the doubles point, largely in part to a comeback win by junior Julie Arthofer and Liz Piscitelli at second doubles and then wins by the bottom three singles players, as Lehigh earns a split of its opening weekend matches and improves to 1-1 on the season.
Arthofer and Piscitelli were down early in their match with Julie Korshunova and Jinny DeCarlos but mounted a furious rally to eventually win 9-7. A comfortable 8-1 win from senior Ruthie Furman and junior Stacey Reich at third singles gave the Brown and White the opening point.
In singles play, FDU raced to wins in the first three flights, although Piscitelli took Chernyshova to three sets at No. 3 singles. With senior captain Allie Schwartz still not competing in singles, the bottom three flights in the Lehigh lineup stepped up and picked up victories to give Lehigh its first triumph of the season. Reich won 7-5, 6-1 over Jessica DeCarlos at fourth singles, while Furman won in straight sets over Jinny DeCarlos at No.5 singles. The sixth and final flight went to sophomore Kiera Murasko-Blank, who downed Christina Martine 6-3, 6-2.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Thursday when they welcome the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to the Lewis Tennis Center. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
