Mountain Hawks suffer 7-0 setback to Rutgers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off its first win of the spring season on Sunday, the Mountain Hawks were unable to carry the momentum into Thursday’s match with Big East member Rutgers as the visiting Scarlet Knights earned a 7-0 win over Lehigh Thursday afternoon at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Scarlet Knights swept all three doubles flights and all six singles matches en route to their first win of the season. The Mountain Hawks fall to 1-2 with the loss.
Lehigh’s lineup was bolstered by the return of senior captain Allie Schwartz to singles action, but injuries left the Mountain Hawks shorthanded as the match progressed. The Mountain Hawks were without junior Stacey Reich, and senior Ruthie Furman was forced to retire in the second set of her match with Caitlin Baker at fifth singles. Both players earned points with singles wins against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
Schwartz made her return at No. 2 singles, where she fell to Katherine Arlak 7-5, 6-2. The only singles match to go three sets was at No. 4 singles, where freshman Liz Piscitelli won the first set versus Maryana Milchutskey, before dropping the next two.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the courts on Saturday, February 14, when they welcome the Towson Tigers to the Lewis Tennis Center for a match that begins at 2 p.m.
