Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh senior Kristin Strohm scored four times, but it wasn’t enough as Monmouth defeated the Mountain Hawks by a 12-7 score on Saturday afternoon. The win was Monmouth’s first of the season; the Hawks are now 1-3. Meanwhile the loss was Lehigh’s fourth straight defeat, dropping the Mountain Hawks’ mark to 2-4 on the season.
Strohm scored two quick first half goals for Lehigh, to put the Mountain Hawks ahead by a 2-0 score less than four minutes into the contest. However, Monmouth rattled off six straight scores from six different players to build a 6-2 lead with 7:16 remaining in the first half. As time began to wind down, Strohm scored her third goal of the day for Lehigh, cutting the Hawks’ lead to 6-3 with 1:26 left in the stanza. Colleen Murphy added a score for Monmouth to build a 7-3 lead with just 26 seconds left. However, with just four ticks left on the clock, Lehigh’s Sarah Corrigan found the back of the net for an unassisted score to make it a 7-4 game at the half.
In the second half, the two teams traded goals, as Monmouth maintained a three-goal cushion at 10-7 with 14:39 to play. However, the Mountain Hawks could get no closer. Monmouth scored the final two goals of the match, to leave Bethlehem with a 12-7 win and its first victory of the season.
Though each team took 21 shots, Monmouth dominated possession. The Hawks scooped up 26 ground balls to Lehigh’s 11. Monmouth was led by Stacy Sydlo, who scored three goals and added three assists in the win. Beka Murphy scored four times for the Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks have a tough road ahead, as Lehigh plays its next two contests away from home. Lehigh will look to get back on the right track on Tuesday, as the Mountain Hawks visit St. Joseph’s. First draw is scheduled for 5:00 from Philadelphia.
