Lehigh bests Manhattan in season opener

Bethlehem, PA – Freshman Sarah Corrigan scored three goals and freshman Barrie Cominsky added two more as the Mountain Hawks downed the Manhattan Lady Jaspers by a 10-7 score at the Ulrich Sports Complex Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
      After giving up an early goal to Manhattan’s Nora Jacquette, Cominsky responded by scoring twice on her first three shots, to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 2-1 less than nine minutes into the first half. Corrigan then scored twice in the next six minutes to give Lehigh a 4-1 lead halfway through the period. Manhattan responded, and tied the contest at four, before three unanswered Lehigh goals – including a Corrigan strike with 16 seconds remaining – put the Mountain Hawks ahead by a 7-4 count at the half.
      In the second, the two teams traded goals, each scoring three times. Lehigh went on to the 10-7 win, out-shooting the Lady Jaspers 31-17.
      After the contest, Lehigh head coach Jackie Keeley noted that while she was pleased with the result, there still lies plenty of room for her team to improve: "We came out kind of sluggish early on," Keeley said. "I thought we responded better late in the first half, and kept up the intensity in the second [period]."
      The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host the Binghamton Bearcats at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Action gets underway at 2:00.
