BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The currently undefeated Mountain Hawks are heading down to West Palm Beach, Florida to take on the Boston College Eagles this Sunday evening. Lehigh is 2-0 this season after beating St. Joseph’s in the season opener at the Ulrich Sports Complex and then Mount St. Mary’s on its home turf in Emmittsburg, Md. last Sunday. “We’re looking forward to a competitive game on Sunday and the opportunity to have some practice time while we’re down there,” explained head coach Jill Redfern. “Both us and Boston College are 2-0 at this point so Sunday will present a challenge for our team.”
The Mountain Hawks defeated the Mountaineers 11-10 last weekend, when freshman Leigh Ann Torcivia scored after 2:43 of overtime play. Towards the end of the second half, the game was tied at nine with only 1:34 to go, when Lehigh freshman Kelly Draper found the back of the net, putting the Mountain Hawks in the lead with only 27 seconds left in the game. However, their relief was short-lived after sophomore Mountaineer Kelly Taylor tied up the score with only one tick left, which sent the game into overtime.
Sophomore Allison Thomas scored a team-high four goals for the Mountains Hawks and was followed by Draper who scored twice. Junior Inneke Carmola, senior Sara McIntyre, sophomore Lauren Dykstra and freshman Lauren Murray each netted one goal during the game to contribute to the win.
Dykstra currently leads the Brown and White with six goals and seven points, while Thomas has found the back of the net five times and totaled seven points, while scooping up a team-high 11 ground balls. Junior Kelsy Ferris has sent back 20 shots in 126 minutes of action in goal for the Mountain Hawks during the early going.
The Eagles are also currently 2-0 this season after crushing Niagara University 20-1 last Sunday and Canisius College 18-13 in their season opener. They ended their 2008 season with an overall record of 7-10 compared to Lehigh’s 10-7 record.
While in Florida the Mountain Hawks will be afforded the opportunity to practice in warm weather for the first time this season. “We’ll be able to have longer, quality practices,” explained Redfern. “This will help to elevate our conditioning level and prepare us for what will be a very competitive game.”
When asked if the team has any type of special events planned while in the Sunshine State, Redfern answered, “We’ll spend a little time away from the game, but for the most part we’re going down there to practice hard and face a competitive opponent.”
This is only the second meeting of these two teams, with the first having taken place over 20 years ago. Lehigh previously defeated the Eagles 6-2 in 1981. The opening draw is set for 5:00 on Sunday.
