Santa Clara outlasts Lehigh in thriller

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh opened its season on Friday night with a gut-wrenching 64-63 loss to Santa Clara at Stabler Arena Friday night. The Broncos open their season with a 1-0 record, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-1. The Mountain Hawks were led in both scoring and rebounding by senior forward Anne Tierney, who notched a double-double, registering 20 points and 13 rebounds. In the first half, Santa Clara came out firing and built its lead to double digits, but Lehigh used strong defense to pull within three points at intermission. Sophomore Mary Frances Hynoski paced Lehigh with eleven points in the first half, and she finished up with 13 points for the game. The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the final minutes of the game until the Broncos eventually came out on top. Santa Clara's leading scorer was Whitney Sutak with 16 points, including four jumpers from behind the arc. Lehigh shot 38 percent from the field, while Santa Clara shot almost 44 percent for the game. Lehigh returns to action on Sunday, as the Mountain Hawks travel to Pittsburgh to meet Duquesne.
