Duquesne proves too much for Lehigh

Pittsburgh, PA – Duquesne ran out to a 6-0 lead early, and never trailed as the Dukes defeated Lehigh by a 64-48 score at the A.J. Palumbo Center on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Dukes’ record to 1-1; the Mountain Hawks drop to 0-2. Duquesne’s Candace Futrell scored 13 points in the first half in leading her team to a 32-26 cushion at halftime. The junior finished the day with a career high 34 points on 15-of-25 shooting. Down by six at the intermission, Lehigh rallied to start the second half, closing to within one point, at 34-33 with 17:52 remaining. However, the Dukes responded with a 24-8 run to pull ahead and ultimately seal the victory. After cutting the Duquesne lead to one, Lehigh was unable to find the basket, shooting just 25% (5-20) from the floor in the second half. The Mountain Hawks finished the day shooting 34% from the floor, and just 1-of-10 from long range. Defensively, Lehigh played aggressively all afternoon, coming away with six steals and forcing 27 Dukes turnovers. Sophomore Mary Frances Hynoski continued her strong play, scoring six points while coming away with three steals and dishing out three assists. Anne Tierney and Carli Toliver led Lehigh in the scoring column, with seven points apiece. Lehigh returns to the court on Saturday, November 30, when the Mountain Hawks host Cornell in the opening round of the Christmas City Classic.
