Lehigh downs Cornell in tournament action

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh shot a season-best 54% in the second half as the Mountain Hawks defeated Cornell 79-57 in the first round of the Christmas City Classic at Stabler Arena on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Mountain Hawks’ record to 1-2 on the season, while the loss drops the Big Red to 1-3. Lehigh had an excellent afternoon at the free throw line, shooting 79% (26-of-33) on the afternoon. Junior Jana Ransom paced Lehigh’s effort with 14 points (including 8-of-10 from the stripe) and six rebounds. Ransom also finished with four assists in the contest as well. Cat Nicholson added 12 points, and Carli Toliver 10 for the victorious Mountain Hawks, who used a 19-12 run early in the second half to build a 20 point cushion at 56-36. The Big Red were able to cut the Lehigh lead to 8, but could get no closer. Cornell was led by Lynell Davis, who scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Cornell turned the ball over 23 times on the afternoon, while Lehigh committed only 12 turnovers. The Mountain Hawks will take on Ball State in the championship game tomorrow at 3:30. The Cardinals defeated UT-Martin 98-61 on Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks will take on Cornell in the consolation game, which begins at 1:00. Scoring
