Men triumph, women fall to West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Lehigh’s men’s swimming and diving team moved to 3-0 on the dual meet season by winning 11 of 16 events in a 179-121 win over West Chester at Graham Natatorium. The Mountain Hawks had to settle for a split however as the Golden Ram women used their depth to limit Lehigh to four event wins in a 165-132 West Chester win, dropping the Lehigh women to 2-1 on the season.
Senior Kevin McGrath won three individual events and freshman Tyler Lareau won two to lead the Lehigh men. McGrath captured the 100 yard breaststroke in 59.57 and also took the 200 in 2:11.80. He also led a top-three Lehigh sweep in the 200 yard IM with a winning time of 1:58.81. Lareau captured the 100 back in 52.85 and later led a 1-2 Mountain Hawk finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.66.
The Mountain Hawks also swept the top three spots in the 200 back, with Andrew Kim winning the event in 1:56.58 and Lareau taking second place. Lehigh also had individual men’s wins from sophomore Chris Toth in the 1000 free, sophomore Angelo DiGiacinto in the 100 fly and freshman Frank Cuzzola in the 200 Free. Lehigh also captured both relays with Lareau, McGrath, DiGiacinto and Cuzzola taking the 200 medley relay in 1:36.58 and Cuzzola teaming with seniors Ryan Guttormsen and Ben Dearden and junior Andrew DiPietro to win the 400 free relay in 3:12.76.
On the diving boards, sophomore Ryan Helfrich led Lehigh with third place finishes in the one and three meter events.
The women’s effort was highlighted by 1-2-3 sweeps of both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events. Senior Stephanie Naylor won the 100 with a time of 1:08.26 with freshmen Emily DiDonato and Danielle Caruso taking second and third respectively. In the 200 it was DiDonato touching the wall first in 2:29.21, followed by Caruso and Naylor. Sophomore Priscilla Barletta also picked up a win in 200 back with a time of 2:13.29.
Senior Erin Tormey picked up Lehigh’s fourth win, taking the three-meter dive with 219.70 points. Tormey also placed third in the one-meter. Despite just the four event wins, the Mountain Hawks did provide a number of second place finishes, including five instances where Lehigh women finished 2-3 or 2-3-4 in an event.
The Lehigh men will open their home schedule next Saturday when they welcome Colgate to Jacobs Pool for a 2 p.m. meet. The women will be off next weekend and will open their home slate on Saturday November 7 when they join the men in hosting Rider.
