Women prevail, men suffer first loss at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Allison Rolish and sophomore Alena Pollitt each won two events to lead the Lehigh women’s swimming and diving team to a 167-133 win over Patriot League rival Army Friday night at Crandall Pool. The Mountain Hawks won just seven of 16 events but strung together a number of top-two and top-three finishes as they improved to 5-3 with the win. Lehigh had to settle for a split however as the Army men won 12 of the first 14 events en route to a 176-123 win over the Mountain Hawks, as the Brown and White men (8-1) were handed their first dual loss of the season.

 

Rolish led a top-three sweep for the Mountain Hawks winning the 1000 free with a time of 10:39.09. Freshman Danielle Caruso and sophomore Jill Rann captured the second and third spots. Rolish also captured the 500 free in 5:15.48 Pollitt led Lehigh in both backstroke events, taking the 100 in 1:01.40 and the 200 in 2:10.32. Sophomore Lauren Armstrong added a second place finish to Pollitt in the 100.

 

Other women’s winners for Lehigh included freshman Katie Haycraft, who won the 200 free in 1:56.80, while the tandem of senior Stephanie Naylor and freshman Emily DiDonato swapped 1-2 finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Naylor won the 100 in 1:07.26 with DiDonato finishing second, and then DiDonato captured the 200 in 2:25.88 with Naylor swimming to a runner-up finish.

 

Freshman Tyler Lareau was the only male individual event winner for Lehigh in the first 14 men’s events. Lareau continued his strong freshman campaign with a win in the 100 back with a time of 52.24. Lehigh’s men also won the 400 medley relay, with Lareau teaming with seniors Kevin McGrath and Ben Dearden and freshman Frank Cuzzola turning in a time of 3:20.48.

 

Lehigh’s also men also scored in the 400 IM and the 200 free relay with Army’s swimmers competing unscored.

 

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday, January 23 when they host league rival Bucknell in Lehigh’s final home meet of the season. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. from Jacobs Pool.
