BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After finishing ahead of Colgate at last year’s Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh men’s swimming and diving team had something to prove. The Raiders were picked fourth, one spot ahead of the Mountain Hawks in this year’s preseason poll. Motivated by that prognostication, Lehigh delivered one of its most impressive performances of the last five years, winning 10 of 16 events en route to a 195-105 victory over Colgate Saturday at Jacobs Pool.
Freshman Tyler Lareau won three individual events as the Mountain Hawks improved to 4-0 on the dual season and 2-0 against Patriot League foes.
“I knew it would be a good meet, but our guys wanted to make a statement to the league,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “The races were close, but each time our guys pushed to win 1-2 or 1-2-3. It was a great day for the team. High praise goes to Tyler Lareau who won all three of his events. His performance spurred the rest of the team to go into overdrive.”
Lareau swam to first place finishes in the 100 yard backstroke (52.32), the 500 freestyle 4:45.42 and the 200 individual medley (1:57.28). Senior Kevin McGrath once again swept the breaststroke events, taking the 100 in 1:00.48 and the 200 in 2:11.91.
Other winners for Lehigh included sophomore Chris Toth, who captured the 1000 free in 9:52.54; freshman Alex Aboud, who led a 1-2-3 Lehigh finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.42; freshman Andrew Kim, who also led a top three sweep in the 200 backstroke with a winning time of 1:56.00; and sophomore Angelo DiGiacinto who won the 100 fly with a time of 52.11
In the day’s first swimming event, Lareau, McGrath, DiGiacinto and senior Ryan Guttormsen captured the 400 yard medley relay in 3:31.62.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Saturday when the full squad takes on Rider. Action begins with diving at 10 a.m. at Jacobs Pool.
