Lehigh, ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region, travels to Happy Valley on Wednesday to take on Big Ten member Penn State (6-8) for a key match up of perennial regional powers. The Mountain Hawks are in the midst of a ten game unbeaten streak, the longest in school history, but have also tied the previous five contests, giving Lehigh seven on the season. The seven ties are already a school record with three regular season games remaining.
Even though more games than the team would have liked are ending in ties, the Mountain Hawks defense is still one of the best around. Lehigh (7-1-7) has already shutout nine opponents, which ties a school record, and the team is ranked fifth in the nation with a 60% shutout rate, and also sits at seventh in the NCAA with a minuscule goals against average of just 0.54.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Bishop is also climbing the ladder nationally, as he sits in 11th place overall with a .536 goals against average. Senior co-captains Doug Cusick and Wes Roach lead the defense, receiving help from junior Brandon Smith and sophomore Jose Larin. On offense, Steve Fisher leads the attack as the senior has registered eight goals on the season, good for second in the Patriot League and 16 points, which sits him in third place in the league.
Following Wednesday’s match with the Nittany Lions, Lehigh gets back into Patriot League action with two critical games left on the schedule. The Mountain Hawks, who currently sit in fifth place in the league, make the trip out to Easton on Halloween night for a match up against archrival Lafayette. The Penn State match will be broadcast live on the PSU website, beginning at 7:00.
