Bethlehem, PA – Sophomore Brandon Smith scored his first goal of the season, with just :13 remaining in regulation to give the Mountain Hawks (6-4-1, 2-1 Patriot League) a 1-0 victory over Army on Friday night. The win was Lehigh’s fourth in a row.
The game nearly went to overtime scoreless, as neither team could get onto the scoreboard on a rainy evening in West Point, NY. Then with just seconds remaining, senior All-American Evan Bruno fed Smith for the game winner. The assist was Bruno’s team best fourth of the season.
Ryan Grzeszczak and the Lehigh defense extended their shutout streak to three games. The shutout was Grzeszczak’s fourth of the season and school record 21st of his career. The Mountain Hawks have now held opponents scoreless for 297:53.
"We were fortunate to get the goal with only :13 left," head coach Dean Koski said. "I thought we played well. We got some good chances earlier than that, but we failed to take advantage of them. With the game on Sunday, we were glad the game didn’t have to go to overtime."
In non-conference action on Sunday, Lehigh will take on the 18th ranked Blue Devils of Duke University. Game time is set for 1:00 in Durham, NC. The game can be heard live on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu.
