Two Lehigh teams set to open league play

With the fall seasons in full swing, this weekend marks the beginning of the "second season" for two of Lehigh’s teams: the beginning of Patriot League play. Both the field hockey and men’s soccer teams open up league play on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks field hockey team begins its quest for a berth in the Patriot League postseason tournament when they open league play on Saturday at Colgate in a match beginning at 11 am. Junior Blaire Goodwin has led the Mountain Hawks attack, and is among the Patriot League leaders with four goals and eight points. Lehigh got off to a strong start this season by winning its first two matches, but has fallen on hard times of late, dropping its last four.
Despite the tough times of late, head coach Michelle Finegan remains encouraged by what she has seen thus far. "We’ve been playing good hockey lately," Finegan said. "Though the results haven’t shown it, there are a lot of positives we can take from these recent games which will make us better prepared for play within the league."
Meanwhile, the men’s soccer team remains in Bethlehem for its Patriot League opener, as the Mountain Hawks play host to Holy Cross on Saturday at 5:00. Lehigh is 2-3-1 so far in 2002, having played some very tough competition. Most recently, the Brown & White dropped two tough overtime contests last weekend in the Richmond/Nike Challenge Cup, falling to host Richmond in double overtime, and losing an overtime contest to Virginia Commonwealth the following afternoon. As can be expected, senior All-American Evan Bruno has paced the Lehigh offense, notching three goals and seven points in five games played.
Lehigh head coach Dean Koski is excited to begin league competition, but knows that a tough road lies ahead. "Holy Cross is one of the best teams in the league, and their results so far this season have revealed that," Koski explains. "[The Crusaders] are coming in with a lot of confidence, and this will be a tough test for us. We consider ourselves the underdogs going in."
The soccer match against Holy Cross will be broadcast live on the Lehigh web site at www.lehigh.edu, and fans can keep up with the latest results and team information – including schedules and statistics – on each team’s web page.
