West Point, NY – All-American senior forward Evan Bruno scored his first goal of the season, a game winner, as the Mountain Hawks defeated the College of Charleston by a score of 2-1 in the Lehigh/Army Soccer Classic on Sunday. Lehigh improved its record to 1-0-1 on the season.
Junior Steve Fisher got the scoring started for Lehigh, when he beat Cougar keeper Chris Simpson for his first goal of the season. Freshman Manbaj Gill picked up his first collegiate assist on the goal.
The lead would not last long, only 26 seconds, before Charleston’s Jeff Files got one past Lehigh goalie Ryan Grzeszczak to knot the score at one. That score would stand until Bruno scored the game winner at the 68:10 mark.
Grzeszczak picked up the victory in goal for the Mountain Hawks, playing the entire game and stopping five Cougar shots. Lehigh outshot Charleston 13-8 on the afternoon.
"We gave up a goal early, but we didn’t get rattled," head coach Dean Koski said. The goal by Bruno in the second half was a good goal and locked up the match for us. We played solid after a quick turnaround and got good efforts not only from our starters, but also the bench players."
The trio of Fisher, Bruno, and Grzeszczak were recognized on the All-Tournament team. Fisher and Bruno each scored a goal, while Fisher added a pair of assists for the weekend. Grzeszczak allowed just two goals, while playing 200 minutes in goal and making eight saves.
Lehigh takes the field again on Friday, September 6th when the Mountain Hawks host Delaware at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
