Lehigh, Davidson battle to tie in opener

West Point, NY – Lehigh and Davidson battled to a 1-1 tie in the first round of the Lehigh/Army Soccer Classic on Friday evening. Both teams are now 0-0-1 on the young season.
The two teams fought hard in the first half, with neither being able to dent the scoreboard. The Wildcats broke the scoreless deadlock in the 69th minute, as David Sartorio slipped a shot past Lehigh goalie Ryan Grzeszczak on the left side, putting Davidson up by a 1-0 score.
However, the Mountain Hawks refused to lie down, and junior Doug Cusick found the back of the net on a stellar cross from Steve Fisher in the 81st minute, tying the match at 1-1. Neither team could break through the opposing defense in the final 38+ minutes, and the contest ended in a draw.
Grzeszczak played well in the Lehigh net, notching three saves on the day. The Mountain Hawks had an abundance of opportunities throughout the course of the match, out-shooting the Wildcats by a 21-12 margin.
"We made one mistake defensively, and they capitalized on that," said Lehigh head coach Dean Koski. "We came after them and did all we could. We gave all we had and just couldn’t finish, but we did a good job overall for our first game, and now we’ll look to Sunday."
Lehigh returns to action on September 1 as the Lehigh/Army Soccer Classic comes to a close. The Mountain Hawks square off against the College of Charleston at 1:00 from West Point.
