Bethlehem, PA – Four members of the Lehigh men’s soccer team were honored by the NSCAA as Mid-Atlantic Regional All-Americans.
Junior Evan Bruno made his second consecutive appearance on the First Team. The forward, despite missing two contests to injury, led the Patriot League in scoring in 2001 with nine goals, 23 points, 0.6 goals per game, and 1.53 points per game. The league scoring title was also a repeat performance for the 2000 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, as was his selection to the All-League First Team.
Bruno formed a potent one-two punch with Doug Cusick, who was named to the Second Team Mid-Atlantic All Region Team. The sophomore was turning in a strong follow-up to his 2000 Patriot League Rookie of the Year campaign until injury forced him from the lineup for a total of five games over the course of the season. Despite missing nearly a third of the season, Cusick ended up tied for sixth in the Patriot League with six goals and 14 points. His efforts earned him a place on the Patriot League Second Team.
The Mid-Atlantic Third Team saw two Mountain Hawks receive recognition, in goalkeeper Ryan Grzeszczak and midfielder Dan Perciballi. Grzeszczak, a junior, was excellent in goal all season for Lehigh recording eight shutouts in 17 starts, and allowing only 0.84 goals against. Junior co-captain Perciballi joined Bruno on the Patriot League’s First Team, building on his late season heroics from 2000 when he was named the MVP of the Patriot League Tournament.
This season marked the sixth straight year the Lehigh soccer program has produced at least one Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American. Four of those seasons there have been at least two Mountain Hawks honored as regional All-Americans, with 2001’s quartet the most since five Lehigh players earned the distinction in 1988. Cusick, Grzeszczak, and Perciballi join Bruno, Andrew Casey, Kevin Jackson, Andrew Mittendorf, Will Orben, and Allan Charles as recipients of this honor over the past six years. Since 1990, Bruno becomes one of just three Lehigh standouts to garner accolades more than once, and the only Mountain Hawk to make the First Team more than once. Jackson was a three-time Regional All-American from 1997-99 and Mittendorf received the honor in 1997 and 1998.
