Lawrenceville, NJ – Lehigh earned its fourth consecutive shutout as the Mountain Hawks (8-2, 2-1 Patriot League) hung on to defeat the Rider University Broncs (2-6-2, 2-1 MAAC) by a one-nothing score on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks, ranked fourth in the Middle-Atlantic Region, have not allowed their opponents to score a goal in the last 378:50 of play.
Lehigh got on the board when junior Evan Bruno beat Rider goalkeeper Brian Gill for his league-best eighth goal of the season at 24:14 to give the Mountain Hawks the lead. The goal – which was unassisted – came when Bruno shot low, and Gill lunged to his left but was unable to make the stop.
The Broncs refused to give in during the second half. Rider kept pounding the ball at the Lehigh net, but the Lehigh defense and junior keeper Ryan Grzeszczak did not budge. Rider put six second half shots on net, but was unable to score as the Mountain Hawks hung on for the hard-fought win. Lehigh earned its fourth straight triumph, the Mountain Hawks’ longest winning streak of the season.
Despite the win, Lehigh head coach Dean Koski pointed out that his team has plenty of room for improvement. "This was not one of our best matches," Koski said. "It was difficult for us to get in any kind of flow, and to Rider’s credit, they kept battling. They were putting the pressure on us, and all we could do was defend. We need to step up our efforts this weekend."
Lehigh looks for its fifth straight victory on Saturday, when the Mountain Hawks travel to Lewisburg to take on Bucknell University.
