Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh assistant coach Mike O’Connell has been tabbed one of the best assistant coaches in the nation by collegesoccernews.com. O’Connell, a 1993 graduate of Lehigh, is in his seventh season as an assistant under head coach Dean Koski.
The web site noted that the Lehigh coaching staff makes "a genuine effort to make the experience of playing collegiate soccer meaningful to their players."
"Mike has been a tremendous asset to our program over the past decade as both a player and assistant coach," Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said. "His energy, enthusiasm, teaching ability, and passion for the game have contributed significantly to our winning tradition. I consider Mike to be one of the best assistant coaches in the nation, as well as one of the best kept secrets, though, apparently it isn't a secret anymore!"
While playing at Lehigh, O’Connell earned the Coaches Award in recognition of his contributions to the team. O’Connell still finds time to play, as a member of the Sunburst Soccer Club in Bethlehem. Sunburst is recognized as one of the top men’s amateur teams in the country.
The Mountain Hawks are off to a 5-2 start in 2001, and will return to action on Saturday when they host Colgate at Lehigh’s Ulrich Field at 3:00.
