Lehigh stampedes past Buffalo

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh freshman Kyle Hartman (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) did not need very long to adapt to the level of play in collegiate soccer. In his first game, Hartman put back a rebound in the 16th minute to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead, and the Mountain Hawks (1-0) never looked back, downing the University at Buffalo Bulls 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Lehigh-Army Soccer Classic at Ronald J. Ulrich Field. Hartman finished the day with two goals and two assists.
Buffalo (0-1) trailed by only one goal at intermission, but that deficit grew quickly as the second half began. The Mountain Hawks came out blazing, scoring goals on their first four shots of the second half. Junior Dan Perciballi took a pass from Hartman and beat his defender to give Lehigh a two-nothing lead in the 50th minute. Less than three minutes later, last year’s Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Evan Bruno, scored on another Hartman assist to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 cushion. After sustaining an injury on the Bruno goal, Bulls’ keeper Chris Vavrina was replaced by Brian Wozniak.
Lehigh put the pressure on the new Bulls keeper right away. Sophomore Doug Cusick found the back of the net with some help from Colin Marshall on the first shot Wozniak faced to make the score 4-0. Kyle Hartman scored once again in the 56th minute as the Mountain Hawks went on to the win.
"I’m pleased with the result of playing in this stadium for the first time," said Lehigh head coach Dean Koski. "A 5-0 win is something you don’t see every day in Division I soccer, and Buffalo is a pretty good team."
Last night, Boston topped the Black Knights 1-0 before the rains and lightning came, forcing the Lehigh-Buffalo match to be postponed until Saturday.
Lehigh and Buffalo will both be back in action Sunday as the Lehigh-Army Soccer Classic continues. The Bulls battle Army at noon, and Lehigh takes on Boston University at 2:30 p.m. "Boston is a very solid team," Koski said. "I’ve got a great deal of respect for them, and they’ve had a day to recover, while we’re going back-to-back [days]. It’s going to be a battle."
Ticket’s for Sunday’s session can be purchased at the gate, and are $5 for all patrons.
