Inside the Lines with Soccer without Borders

More than a dozen young men and boys, all refugees from nations in West Africa who have been resettled in New York City, received a rare treat Saturday night at Giants Stadium — an audience with two professional players whose stories mirror their own. The Red Bulls and Major League Soccer, working in association with the nonprofit organization Soccer Without Borders, played host to the young men and boys from Ivory Coast, Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Guinea. All of them, and their families, received refugee status and have been resettled in the five boroughs of New York City. Former Lehigh men’s soccer standout Ben Gucciardi ’05 is the founding director of Soccer Without Borders.
