Collina, McBride start strong as members of the Tribe

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – While their professional baseball careers are barely a week old, two former Lehigh standouts are already making their presence felt on the Minor League Baseball diamonds as members of the Cleveland Indians farm system. In the first week of their respective seasons, pitcher Kyle Collina and catcher Matt McBride have helped key their new teams to victory.

On Saturday, Collina made his first professional appearance as a relief pitcher for the Burlington (N.C.) Indians of the Appalachian League. The right-hander entered the game in the top of the seventh inning, and calmly fanned five hitters from the visiting Bristol (Va.) Sox in two innings of work. In addition to recording five of his six outs via the strikeout, Collina scattered two hits and did not allow a run as the Indians earned a 5-2 win.

With Sunday’s game rained out, Burlington’s record stands at 2-1 entering Monday’s doubleheader vs. Bristol.

Meanwhile, in the New York-Penn League, McBride is already making his mark as the designated hitter for the Niles, Ohio-based Mahoning Valley Scrappers. In Sunday’s home win over the Williamsport (Pa.) Crosscutters, McBride went 2-for-4 with his first professional home run and four RBIs as the Scrappers won 8-4. McBride, the 2006 Patriot League player of the year, hit a three-run blast off Williamsport’s Henry Cabrera with two outs in the seventh inning.

Overall, McBride is 4-for-12 at the plate with five runs batted in and a .583 slugging percentage.

The Scrappers are 3-3 on the season, and will host State College (Pa.) on Monday night.
