Bradenton, FL – Freshman Jack Lyons struck out eight and allowed only one run in pitching the team’s first complete game of the season as the Mountain Hawks defeated Yale by a 3-1 score at the IMG Baseball Academy on Thursday morning.
"Jack gave us a terrific performance on the mound today," said head coach Sean Leary. "He continually got ahead of hitters, and showed a lot for a freshman making his first start. This was exactly what we needed at this time of the week."
Lehigh (3-4) gave Lyons an early lead to work with, as the Mountain Hawks plated a run in the bottom half of the first when a Jeremy Mack sacrifice fly scored Eric Hoffman to give Lehigh an early one-run advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, the Mountain Hawks added a run when a Jesse Novalis single through the left side plated Hoffman, who had led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Jeff Quiros laced a single to right field, scoring John Zaszewski to give Lehigh a three-nothing lead.
Yale (1-3) dented the scoreboard for the only time in the seventh inning. After right fielder CJ Orrico led off the inning with a double, Steven Duke singled to right field allowing Orrico to score what would be the Bulldogs’ only run of the game.
All in all, Lyons went nine innings, allowing just the one run to score. He scattered eight hits, and did not walk a batter while recording eight strikeouts.
Lehigh returns to the diamond on Friday to do battle with St. Francis (NY). Last year’s Patriot League Rookie of the Year – Jack Muscalus – will take the hill for the Mountain Hawks. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 from the IMG Academy in Bradenton.
