Stawicki strong through seven but Lehigh falls

Bradenton, FL – The Mountain Hawks carried a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on, as Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne rallied for a 4-2 win over Lehigh at the IMG Baseball Academy on Tuesday morning. The win improves the Mastodons’ record to 2-2-1 on the season, while Lehigh drops to 2-3 following the setback.
Lehigh got on the board first, plating a run in the bottom half of the third inning when second baseman John Zaszewski singled home left fielder Dan Russell. In the fifth, the Mountain Hawks plated another run when Jeff Baker scored on a balk.
Meanwhile, sophomore Kyle Stawicki had a solid outing on the mound. He allowed only one run and one hit over seven innings, while striking out seven.
However, the Mastodons rallied to take the lead in the eighth when Zach Walton reached on an error, and Brandon Armstrong smoked a two-run homer to give IPFW the lead.
Lehigh was unable to push any more runs across the plate, and the Mastodons went on to the 4-2 come-from-behind victory.
"I thought Kyle pitched a great game today," head coach Sean Leary said after the game. "He controlled game for seven innings, was very aggressive, and got ahead of guys early in the count."
The Mountain Hawks will look for revenge when they return to the diamond on Wednesday morning to take on IPFW once again at the Baseball Academy. Game time is at 10:30 am from Bradenton.
