Russell and Campbell earn All-League honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh’s top two hitters were named to the 2009 All-Patriot League Teams on Tuesday as sophomore Andy Russell earned a spot on the First-Team and senior captain Geoff Campbell garnered Second-Team accolades. Russell led the Brown and White with a .348 average this past season, with Campbell close behind, maintaining a .342 average. This marks the eighth consecutive season Lehigh has placed at least one player on the All-League First Team.
Russell’s .348 average ranks 12th best in the Patriot League, while his 57 hits are tenth best. He finished the 2009 season with 35 runs scored, 38 RBI, 13 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and ten stolen bases. Russell totaled two or more hits in 16 games, including a season best four in the season finale versus league foe Bucknell. In that series versus the Bison, Russell was on fire at the plate going 8-for-10 with two round trippers, one double and six runs batted in.
Russell led the Mountain Hawks in a number of categories this season, including batting average, slugging percentage (.604), on base percentage (.457), runs scored, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks, stolen bases, at bats, games played and game starts. In the field Russell posted a .957 fielding percentage, including 86 putouts and three assists. During Patriot League play the sophomore batted a team leading .418 with 23 hits, six doubles and three home runs, while scoring 15 runs and walking 12 times.
Campbell closes out his career with his first All-League selection after a season in which he did a little of everything for the Mountain Hawks. The Pennsylvania native hit .342 with 51 hits, eight doubles, three triples, three home runs, 17 runs batted in, four stolen bases and 21 runs scored. In the field, Campbell posted a .923 fielding percentage, totaling a team best 118 assists and 63 putouts along the way.
Campbell’s .342 average checks in at number-14 in the Patriot League, while his three triples are third best. The senior registered multiple hits in 15 games, including a season-best four-hit performance versus Navy. During league play Campbell hit .319, including 15 hits, two doubles and one round tripper.
Displaying his versatility, Campbell also appeared in five games as a pitcher for the Brown and White this season, leading the Mountain Hawks in earned run average (1.29) along the way. Campbell struck out three batters in seven innings of work, totaling two saves and allowing just one earned run during that time. He led Lehigh in ERA, opposing batting average, fewest hits allowed, and fewest earned runs allowed.
