BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head baseball coach Sean Leary has announced the hiring of the newest member of his coaching staff. Brian Hirschberg will join the Mountain Hawks as an assistant coach after spending two seasons as an assistant at Penn State Behrend.
“Brian will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff,” Leary said. “His enthusiasm and energy for the game will be a great fit for our young team. The Lehigh program is fortunate to have Brian on board, and I know our players are anxious to start working with Coach Hirschberg in the fall.”
Hirschberg will become the hitting coach for the Mountain Hawks this season, and he will also be very active in Lehigh’s recruiting efforts.
At Penn State Behrend, Hirschberg helped lead the Lions to a 61-24 record during his two seasons. Last season, the Lions captured their second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title in school history and earned their first-ever trip to the Division-III NCAA Tournament. Behrend put up impressive offensive numbers in 2008, leading the AMCC in runs scored (326) and finishing second in the league in batting average (.336).
Hirschberg played baseball at Bucknell University for four seasons, playing both catcher and outfield. He led the Bison in several offensive categories in his time there, including home runs, triples and runs batted in. Hirschberg hit .305 with four home runs and 17 RBI in his senior season. He earned All-Patriot League honors as a junior in 2003, leading the Bison with six home runs and 27 RBI on a team that captured the Patriot League Title and an NCAA Tournament bid.
Before joining the Behrend staff, Hirschberg was an assistant coach at Glen Rock High School in New Jersey where he was an All-State catcher.
Hirschberg graduated from Bucknell in 2004, with a degree in economics. While at Bucknell, he was a regular member of the Dean's List and was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for three straight seasons. Hirschberg completed an MBA from Penn State Behrend in May 2008.
