BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s soccer team will continue Patriot League play on Saturday night when they travel to Easton to take on archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks (5-2-2) are coming off a strong 2-0 win against Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday that propelled them to a 4-0-1 record in their last five games.
Junior Zach Gould scored the game’s first goal in the 37th minute off an assist that began with a corner kick from senior captain Adam Gazda to fellow senior Adam Welch who got the ball to Gould. Gazda and Welch connected again in the second half off another corner kick that allowed Welch to add one more for the Mountain Hawks. Junior keeper Jonathan Nydell played a great game, with four saves to lead Lehigh to victory despite a 10-5 shot differential.
The Mountain Hawks won their first Patriot League game of the season Saturday September 26, against Colgate. The Raiders, the reigning league champions for the past two years, scored on themselves in the first overtime to give the Brown and White an important opening league victory. Lafayette opened Patriot League play last weekend when it beat Holy Cross 1-0 in double overtime.
The Leopards (6-2-1) are coming off a 2-0 win against Villanova on Wednesday which was their sixth shut-out of the season. Lafayette has failed to lose at home so far this year, led by junior B.J. Glenn and freshman Sean Peckham who have four goals apiece.
Since Patriot League play began in 1990, the Mountain Hawks are 6-4-14 against the Leopards. In 2008, the teams tied 2-2 at Lehigh.
