Lehigh races past Marist 17-7 at home

“I thought we had a very nice first half; we got off to a strong start which was one of our goals for tonight,” Lehigh head coach Liz Brode Ota commented afterwards. “We scored a fast break goal, another goal right off of the draw control and really took momentum early on. Sara MacIntyre had a beautiful game for us and Kelsy (Ferris) made quite a few huge saves, especially down the stretch.”
Ota continued, “Our draw controls continue to be strong, particularly in the first half tonight, and I thought we got some very solid play off of our bench. Kindall Healy did a nice job for us and that really contributed to our momentum.”
Lehigh unleashed 23 first half shots en route to 34 for the game, led by Dykstra’s 11, while Inneke Carmola was credited with six. MacIntyre and classmate Sarah Fudin led the Brown and White with five ground balls each, while Dykstra and Christy Smith won three draw controls and MacIntyre, Fudin, Seana Smith each won two of their own. Sophomore net minder Kelsy Ferris stopped ten shots in goal for the Mountain Hawks.
Marist was credited with 22 shots, led by Liz Falco and Kate Noftsker with four apiece. Stephanie Garland was the team leader in ground balls with five, while Jessica O’Brien was the lone Red Fox to win more than one draw control (2). Liz Burkhard did her best to keep Marist in the game as she stopped 13 Lehigh shots in goal.
Dykstra got right to work scoring 1:19 into the contest, which gave her the program’s freshman scoring record. The first year standout added her second score 11 seconds later and after Thomas found the back of the net at the 26:11 mark, Marist was forced to call a timeout.
Meagan Tenety got into the scoring act with her 17th goal of the season to put the home team in front 4-0 with 25:05 left in the first half. Lindsey Diener got Marist on the board for the first time at the 22:29 mark, but MacIntyre answered with her 30th score of the year to put Lehigh back in front by four. Falco cut it to a three-goal game at the 20:07 mark, but from there the Mountain Hawks unleashed a 5-0 run as Tenety, Carmola, Kindall Healy and MacIntyre combined for the five scores to put the Brown and White in front 10-2 with 7:47 on the clock.
Ali Carnabuci put a temporary hold on Lehigh’s offensive outburst with her 21st score of 2008, but back came Lehigh with two more scores to close out the half, one each from Thomas and MacIntyre as the Mountain Hawks roared to a 12-3 lead at intermission.
O’Brien got things started for Marist in the second stanza just 45 seconds in, but Christy Smith and Dykstra responded to give Lehigh a 14-4 cushion at the 20:09 clip. O’Brien scored her second goal of the night at the 18:59 mark, but Carmola found the back of the net for the 30th time this season and again Lehigh was in front by double digits.
Back-to-back goals by the Red Foxes made the score 15-7, but Thomas and Dykstra combined for two straight scores of their own as Lehigh won its third game by ten or more goals this season.
