BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight game Lehigh needed overtime to decide a winner, but the Mountain Hawks once again came up one goal short as they fell to Canisius 13-12 at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.  Junior Sara MacIntyre scored a season-high five goals for Lehigh, who falls to 5-5 with the loss, while Emily Maguire and Marissa Brown both netted four scores for Canisius who improves to 4-3.

Brown scored the first goal of overtime at the 2:23 mark and Chelsea Martinez followed that up with a score at the 1:21 mark to put the visitors ahead 13-11.  MacIntyre brought Lehigh to within one with her fifth goal of the contest with 2:02 left in the second, third minute OT period, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to get the tying score.

Lehigh out shot Canisius 36-35 for the game, led by MacInytre and freshman Lauren Dykstra’s ten apiece, while sophomore Inneke Carmola was credited with ten shots.  Dykstra won four draw controls and led the Mountain Hawks with eight ground balls, while Tess McGrath also won four draw controls and caused three turnovers.  Sophomore Kelsy Ferris stopped a season-high 18 shots in goal for the Brown and White as she played the full 66 minutes.

Ashley Gray led the Golden Griffins with eight shots, while Emily Maguire was credited with seven.  Canisius scooped up 41 ground balls, eight more than Lehigh, led by Maguire’s five and Gray and Whitney Card with four each.

“We couldn’t have asked for more from Kelsy (Ferris) today,” Lehigh head coach Liz Brode Ota said afterwards.  “She just made some huge saves for us, particularly in the closing minutes.  We just gave them (Canisius) too many second and third chances.  We weren’t as efficient as we usually are with ground balls or on our free position shots and in the end that hurt us.”

Carmola scored the game’s first goal and MacIntyre backed that up with a goal 1:19 later to put Lehigh in front 2-0.  MaGuire pulled the Griffs to within one with her first score of the day however at the 24:07 mark.  Christy Smith and MacIntyre scored back-to-back goals to put Lehigh in front 4-1 at the 21:49 mark, but two straight scores from the visitors made the score 4-3 in favor of the Mountain Hawks with 11:42 left in the half.

MacIntyre netted her third score of the afternoon with 6:37 to go on the clock, but Maguire scored on a free position shot making the score 5-4 Lehigh.  McGrath answered with a free position goal of her own with 4:39 on the clock, but again Canisius answered, this time from Brown making the score 6-5, which is how it remained as the teams headed for halftime.

Dykstra opened the second half with her first score of the day, and 38th of the season, to put Lehigh in front 7-5 just 18 seconds in.  Two straight goals from the Golden Griffins tied the game at seven though with 25:08 to go in regulation.  MacIntyre put Lehigh back on top, and freshman Kindall Healy gave the Mountain Hawks a two-goal advantage with 21:21 left in the game.  From there Canisius scored four straight times to surge in front 11-9 at the 13:34 mark, but Carmola brought Lehigh to within one with 4:44 left and Dykstra tied things up at 11 with only 36 ticks to go, sending the teams into overtime.

Brode Ota then commented on Lehigh having to play three down-to-the-wire games in the past six days.  “I think we were a little tired out there.  The week started with our game at American which was decided in the last twenty seconds, on Wednesday we played an overtime game on the road and today’s game was another close finish.”  She added, “Wednesday was a case of mental fatigue, and today I think we had tired legs.”

Lehigh is off for the next week before returning to action on Saturday, March 29 when the Mountain Hawks play host to the Holy Cross Crusaders at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is scheduled for 12:00 and all of the action will be shown live on Lehighsports.com.
