BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh unleashed ten unanswered goals in the second half to pull away for a 17-9 victory over Holy Cross at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.  Freshman Lauren Dykstra scored five goals for the Mountain Hawks, while sophomore Inneke Carmola added three goals and three assists.  Dykstra is now only four goals shy of breaking the Lehigh freshman record of 47 set by Sara MacIntyre in 2006.  With the win, Lehigh’s first over Holy Cross since 2003, the Brown and White improves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League action, while the Crusaders fall to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in league play.

The game was close throughout the first 35 minutes before Lehigh unleashed a 10-0 run in a span of 16:59 to surge in front 15-7 at the 4:12 mark of the second half.  Lehigh out shot Holy Cross 35-31 for the game, led by Dykstra’s 11 attempts, while Carmola was credited with eight.  The Mountain Hawks scooped up 35 ground balls with Dykstra totaling seven and Christy Smith and Carolyn Von Heil both adding five.  Lehigh was six-of-nine on free position shots, led by freshman Allison Thomas’ perfect four-of-four showing, while sophomore Kelsy Ferris made 15 saves in goal.

Holy Cross was credited with 31 shots, led by Nikki Bolduc’s nine, while Kelly Winslow scooped up a team high seven ground balls.  Amy Martin made 11 saves in goal for the Crusaders who fall to 0-7 this season on the road.

Carmola netted the game’s first goal at the 28:27 mark but back-to-back scores from Holy Cross put the visitors ahead 2-1 with 21:00 to go in the half.  The two teams alternated the game’s next four scores with Meg O’Leary scoring the final one with 12:46 to go which made the score 4-3 in favor of the visitors.  Thomas and MacIntyre scored two straight times however as Lehigh took a 5-4 lead at the half.

Holy Cross scored three straight times in the first 5:53 to take a 7-5 lead, but from there the Mountain Hawks unleashed ten straight goals, including four from Dykstra, and one each from Carmola, MacIntyre, Christy Smith, McGrath, Thomas and Tenety.  That run put the Brown and White in front 15-7 with 4:12 to go.  Dykstra and Carmola would add two more scores as Lehigh snapped its four-game losing streak.

Lehigh head coach Liz Brode Ota gave her thoughts afterwards.  “This was a full team effort.  Inneke (Carmola) just had a beautiful game with three goals and three assists while LD (Lauren Dykstra) and Allison (Thomas) had standup games.”

Ota then commented on what made Lehigh so successful during the 10-0 second half run.  “We focused on the draw controls and I think that was the most critical piece of the comeback.  It certainly made a difference in the game.”

She continued, “Kelsy (Ferris) was brilliant in the second half and on offense we moved the ball much better than we had been and that created opportunities for us.”

Lehigh will be back in action on Saturday, April 5 when the Mountain Hawks play host to the Navy Midshipmen at the Ulrich Sport Complex.  The opening draw control is set for 12:00 and all of the action will be shown live on Lehighsports.com.
