WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lehigh lost its first Patriot League game of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks fell to American in the closing seconds 9-8.  Freshman Lauren Dykstra scored a team-high three goals for Lehigh and senior Christy Smith added two, but it wasn’t enough as Jackie Lane scored a game-high five goals for the Eagles, including the game-winner with 15 seconds remaining.  With the loss the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League, while American improves to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in league action.

The game was close throughout and the final stats reflect that as American took 29 shots to Lehigh’s 27, the Mountain Hawks scooped up 25 ground balls and the Eagles totaled 23, and Lehigh won nine controls, while AU won ten.

The two teams were whistled for a total of 48 fouls and combined for 39 turnovers, including 21 by Lehigh and 18 committed by the home team.  Kelsey Ferris finished with a 14-save, five ground ball, two caused turnover afternoon, while junior Sarah Fudin and sophomore Jen Ingalls both totaled four ground balls.

American goal keeper Kristine Vida was credited with 11 saves, while Caitlin Bell was the team leader in ground balls with three.

Junior Inneke Carmola scored the game’s first goal for Lehigh just 1:48 in, but Lane netted back-to-back scores to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.  Dykstra (2) and Christy Smith (1) combined for the game’s next three scores, which put Lehigh back on top 4-2 with 22:46 to go in the half.  Goals by Bell and Brittany Finnegan tied the game at four, but Sara MacIntyre answered with an assist from Megan Tenety as Lehigh surged back in front 5-4.

Lane tied the score at five just 12 seconds later, but from there the two teams went a combined 15:38 without scoring before Tenety scored off a feed from Carmola and with 45 seconds to go, the Mountain Hawks were up one.  Lane tied the game yet again though with her third score of the half and the teams went to halftime even at six.

Lauren Lane scored the second half’s first goal off an assist from Jackie Lane and Lehigh found itself down 7-6.  Dykstra and Christy Smith weren’t finished though and their back-to-back goals gave the Brown and White an 8-7 advantage with 16:35 left in the game.

Lauren Aksionoff knotted the game at eight with 10:42 remaining, and as the final seconds ticked off the clock it appeared as though the teams were headed for overtime.  Lane found the back of the net with only 15 seconds to go though, and American held on for its fourth win of the season.

Lehigh will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks stay on the road and travel to Connecticut to take on the Stags of Fairfield.  The opening draw control is set for 4:00.
