PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh won its second straight one-goal game to open the season, as the Mountain Hawks used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Saint Joseph’s 16-15 Monday at Finnesey Field. Four different Mountain Hawks tallied at least three goals, led by junior Sara MacIntyre who netted four and added four ground balls and six draw controls, as Lehigh improves to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore Inneke Carmola and freshman Lauren Dykstra added six points apiece with identical three goal, three assist performances. Saint Joseph’s Jenna Martino led all players with seven goals.

“It was a very tight match-up against a very talented team,” said Lehigh head coach Liz Brode Ota. “We had a nice defensive effort in the second half after we finally adjusted to stop what was working against us. Offensively, we had a great effort from the full unit.”

The game was tight throughout, as neither team enjoyed a lead of more than three goals at any time during the game. Saint Joseph’s opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, before Lehigh answered with three goals to take a 3-1 lead. The Mountain Hawks led 6-4 late in the first half, but Martino’s second and third goals of the game sent the teams into halftime tied at six.

The second half began with the team’s scoring back-and-forth. The Hawks mustered a four-goal run to take a 13-10 lead with 10:44 to play, and after junior Meagan Tenety scored for Lehigh, Martino’s sixth goal put Saint Joseph’s up 14-11 with 8:46 remaining. From there, Lehigh rolled off five straight goals to take a 16-14 lead. Dykstra scored twice to pull Lehigh within one, and then classmate Allison Thomas scored on a free position shot to tie the game.

MacIntyre put Lehigh ahead for good scoring off a feed from Carmola with 4:33 remaining. Thomas netted her third goal 45 seconds later to give Lehigh a two goal cushion. Martino closed out the scoring for Saint Joseph’s with a free position goal with 1:28 to play, but Lehigh held on for its second win to start the season.

Lehigh out shot Saint Joseph’s 29-27 on the afternoon. The Mountain Hawks scooped up 26 ground balls, with MacIntyre and Thomas leading the way with four each, to just 17 for Saint Joseph’s. Lehigh also held an 18-15 advantage in draw controls, and both teams turned the ball over 14 times.

Both goalkeepers, Lehigh sophomore Kelsy Ferris and Saint Joseph’s Suzy Herlihy, made nine saves in the game. Saint Joseph’s opens its season at 0-1, while the Mountain Hawks open up with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2005.

The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Sunday when they welcome the Vanderbilt Commodores to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for noon, and the contest will be broadcast on Lehighsports.com with streaming video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
