BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh opened its 2008 season on a winning note as the Mountain Hawks held off Mount St. Mary’s 10-9 Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Freshman Lauren Dykstra netted three goals in her Lehigh debut including the goal that put the Mountain Hawks ahead for good with 18:22 remaining. Senior Christy Smith and sophomore Inneke Carmola each added two goals and an assist as Lehigh won its season opener for the seventh straight year.

“It was a game of changing momentum,” said Lehigh head coach Liz Brode Ota. “I think we had our fair share of first game nerves, and there’s a certain pressure in the games that you don’t feel in practice. It was really a 50-50 type game but we’re thrilled that we came out on the winning end.”

The Mountain Hawks raced to a 4-1 lead in the first seven minutes of play behind two goals from Dykstra, and one each from junior Sara MacIntyre and freshman Allison Thomas. A goal from Katelyn Catanese put the Mountaineers within two, before Lehigh re-established a two goal lead behind goals from MacIntyre and Smith.

Mount St. Mary’s followed with a five-goal run of its own. Kelly Taylor’s goal off a free position put the Mountaineers on top 7-6 at halftime, and then Catanese netted her fourth goal nine minutes into the second half to make it 8-6.

Carmola keyed Lehigh’s comeback with two goals less than a minute apart, and then Dykstra added an unassisted tally 26 seconds later for the Brown and White.

Down 10-8, Mary Kate Lavin scored to bring the Mount within one with 14:31 to play, but it would be the final goal of the afternoon. Mount St. Mary’s nearly tied the game in the final seconds, but a crease violation nullified an apparent goal.

Lehigh out shot Mount St. Mary’s 27-21 for the game and held a 15-10 advantage in ground balls. Junior Meagan Tenety netted a pair of assists and led Lehigh with three ground balls. The Mountain Hawks also held a 14-7 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore Kelsy Ferris made seven saves in goal for Lehigh, while Jane Karger stopped 11 shots for Mount St. Mary’s.

The Mountaineers were led by Catanese’s four goals, while Rebecca Douglas handed out three assists.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Monday when they travel to Saint Joseph’s. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
