BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Amy Chamberlain and freshman Innneke Carmola each scored three goals and Lehigh opened its 2007 with a 9-7 victory over Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Freshman Kelsy Ferris made 11 saves in goal her Mountain Hawk debut as Lehigh improves to 1-0 in 2007 and the Blue Devils fall to 0-2.

“This was a perfectly fine first game,” third year head coach Liz Ota said afterwards.  “Our girls took care of the ball well and out good pressure on their goal keeper.  Amy had a nice game and I thought our freshmen, Jen Ingalls, Inneke Carmola and Kelsy Ferris, all played very well in their first games.”  She added, “We have a lot of things to work on, but this is only the first game and we’ll take the win.”

The Blue Devils took an early lead when Abby Hayes scored just 42 seconds into the game, but Lehigh responded with scores from Carmola and Chamberlain in a span of 32 seconds to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 2-1.  Julia Steier scored the first of her three goals at the 27:13 mark to tie the contest at two, but sophomore Sara MacIntyre put the home team in front by one with a score of her own with 23:34 left in the half.

Steier then tied the game again with 22:26 to go on a free position shot, but sophomore Tess McGrath gave the Brown and White the lead yet again with a score off of a feed from Chamerlain to make the score 4-3 in favor of Lehigh.  Chamberlain then netted her second goal of the afternoon with just 5:47 left in the half, to send Lehigh into the intermission ahead 5-3.

CCSU scored the first three goals of the second half to surge in front 6-5 with 23:18 left in the game, but two scores from Carmola and a goal from MacIntyre pushed Lehigh back in front at 8-6 with 18:47 remaining.  Hayed would  then bring the visitors to within one goal with her third goal of the day at the 11:14 clip, but a score from Chamberlain with just 3:27 to go gave Lehigh some breathing room.

Lehigh out shot the Blue Devils 28-19 on the afternoon and scooped up 17 ground balls to the visitor’s 12.  CCSU won ten draw controls for the game, while Lehigh won six.  McGrath and junir Christy Smith each scooped up three ground balls for the Mountain Hawks, while MacIntyre unleashed a game-high 11 shots.

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Long Island to take on the Seawolves of Stony Brook.  Game time is set for 4:00.
