Hessemer named Defensive Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its final weekly awards for men’s soccer on Monday and Mountain Hawks defender Michael Hessmer was named the Defensive Player of the Week. The senior co-captain played two excellent defensive games this past week, helping the team record shutouts against Philadelphia University and Colgate. Junior Jim Taranto also received an honorable mention for his performance this past week.

Taranto scored the game-winning goal against Colgate, in the 86th minute, to hand the Raiders their first league loss of the season. The goal also knocked Colgate out of the number one seed for the Patriot League Tournament. Taranto scored his first goal of the week against Philadelphia, coming in the 63rd minute, to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead.

This the second time in his career Hessemer has been named Defensive Player of the Week. Last year against American, he blocked four shots en route to a 4-0 over the Eagles, earning his first career Patriot League award.

The Brown and White finished the 2007 season with a 8-7-2 (3-4-0) record, extending its Patriot League record 12th consecutive winning season. The Patriot League will announce its All-League team and major award winners later this week.
