BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its weekly men’s soccer award winners Monday and two Lehigh players received recognition. Adam Welch was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Jonathan Nydell was named the Goalkeeper of the Week. This is the first time in their careers either player has been recognized by the league. This past week, Lehigh beat Army 2-0 Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex, to improve its record to 6-6-2 (2-3-0) and is still in the hunt for a trip to the Patriot League Championship.
Welch, a sophomore midfielder from Bethlehem, put together one of his best defensive games of the year Saturday. He blocked two shots and limited Army to just three shots on goal all game. The Black Knights came into the contest leading the Patriot League in shots per game.
Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Nydell picked up his first career win and shutout Saturday. The Islamorada, Fla. native stopped three shots to earn the win. The Black Knights entered the contest third in the Patriot League in scoring, averaging 1.27 goals per game.
This is the third week that a Lehigh player has received an award from the Patriot League. Sophomore forward Kyle Evans has been recognized twice this season, with two Offensive Player of the Week awards.
The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Friday night, when they travel to Bucknell for a critical game in the Patriot League standings. The game will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel (Service Electric dial position 164).
