Mountain Hawks upended by tough Colgate squad

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lehigh saw its two game win streak come to an end on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks were upended by a tough Colgate squad 17-6. Sophomore Christy Smith and junior Lissy King score two goals each for the Brown and White who falls to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league action, while the Raiders, who received four goals from Katie McVeigh, improve to 8-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league action.
Lehigh was out shot 37-17 on the afternoon, but scooped up 22 ground balls to the Raiders 18. The Mountain Hawks turned the ball over 27 times, but forced 22 Colgate turnovers. Lehigh was 17 of 20 on clear attempts, but just one of three on free position shots. Kyle Begina went the entire 60 minutes in the goal for Lehigh, sending back ten shots for the game, while three different Raiders saw time in goal, with Sue Bielamowicz and Kari Morrison leading the way with eight stops apiece.
Smith got Lehigh off to a good start with a goal just 1:58 into the contest, but Kelly Winning scored off of a free position shot at the 25:02 mark of the half, tying the game at one. Lissy King would put the Brown and White up 2-1 with a free position goal of her own at the 24:03 mark, and the Mountain Hawks were hanging tough. From there however, the Raiders scored the game’s next nine goals to go in front 10-2 with 7:05 to go in the opening half.
Amy Chamberlain stopped the bleeding for Lehigh as she netted a goal with 6:39 remaining, to make the score 10-3, but Colgate continued to pour it on, scoring three more times before halftime to take a 14-3 lead into the intermission.
Tara Casey opened the second half with a free position goal just 1:01 in, giving the home team a 15-3 advantage. From there, the two teams went scoreless for over 15 minutes until Colgate’s Jess Vander Meulen scored at the 13:37 mark, making the score 16-3 in favor of the home team. The Mountain Hawks would score the game’s next three goals, one each from King, Sara MacIntyre and Smith, to trim the deficit to ten at 16-6 with 4:18 to go, but it was too little, too late.
