Head coach Liz Ota expressed her thoughts following the victory. “I’m really pleased with this win today. We came out strong and really dominated the game to pick up our first league win of the season.” Ota continued, “The girls came out in attack mode right from the start, and were really ready for this one. We made much better decisions on the offensive end and the defense was very strong. I thought (sophomore) Christy Smith played a tremendous game on both ends, and I thought Kyle (Begina) played beautifully in goal all afternoon.”
Junior Amy Chamberlain added three scores, while Smith and Kara Chalanick scored twice each in the win for Lehigh. Begina finished with six saves in goal for the Brown and White, while as a team, the Mountain Hawks scooped up 14 ground balls and won 13 draw controls. Villanova was led on offense by Alex Garvey and her three scores, while starting goal keeper Jessica Brozena stopped eight shots on the day.
Smith started the scoring for Lehigh with a goal at the 20:14 mark of the opening half and MacIntyre added to the Mountain Hawks lead less than two minutes later. Freshman Meagan Tenety then made it 3-0 Lehigh with her ninth score of the season at the 18:17 mark off of an assist from Smith. Chamberlain added another goal for Lehigh as the Brown and White went up 4-0 with 18:06 remaining in the opening half.
Villanova finally got on the scoreboard when Christina Bahrs scored her tenth goal of the season at the 12:02 mark, but Lehigh quickly responded with five straight goals to close out the first half and head into halftime ahead 9-1.
Garvey opened the second half with a goal, but the Mountain Hawks had more than one answer, with four straight goals, one from MacIntyre, another from Lissy King and two from Chamberlain to go in front 13-2 with 18:20 remaining.
