BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman catcher Geoff Campbell hit for the cycle and drove in a modern-day record nine runs as Lehigh thumped visiting Moravian by a 28-3 score at the baseball field on Goodman Campus Thursday afternoon.  In all, five Mountain Hawks had three or more hits as Lehigh rolled to its second straight win, improving to 10-15 on the season.  The Greyhounds fall to 2-15 with the loss.

Campbell got his day started with a two-run double to left-center in the bottom of the first as the Mountain Hawks built a 5-0 lead in the opening frame.  He added an RBI on a fourth inning ground out to make the score 8-2 in favor of the home team.

An inning later, Campbell ripped his first collegiate home run – a three-run shot to left-center – as part of an eight-run fifth inning that put the game well out of reach.

Campbell added a three-run triple in the eighth inning to complete the cycle.  His home run was one of three on the day for Lehigh.  Junior first baseman Matt McBride hit his Patriot League-leading seventh, and sophomore center fielder Joe Ercolano added his second in the win.

Lehigh third baseman Matt Geiger also did his part, going four-for-five with a double and four runs scored.

On the afternoon, Lehigh pounded out 27 hits – the most in a game by a Lehigh team since the Mountain Hawks registered 27 in a win at Maryland-Eastern Shore in 2000.  The Mountain Hawks’ 28-run outburst Thursday marked the most runs scored by a Lehigh team in a single game since LU topped Pittsburgh by a 28-0 score in 1917.

On the mound, the Mountain Hawks ran out ten pitchers on the day.  Sophomore Billy Alec pitched a one-two-three top of the first and was credited with the win, improving his record to 2-1 on the season.

Moravian second baseman John Bisco was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

Thursday’s Lehigh win over its cross-town rival marked the end of a nine-game home stand that saw the Mountain Hawks post a 3-6 record.

Lehigh begins Patriot League play on Saturday with a four-game series at Bucknell.  Action gets underway at Depew Field with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
