Head coach Liz Ota offered her thoughts following the contest. “I thought we got taken out of our game today. Their (Holy Cross) pressure was very effective and took away out our offensive threats. Our defense did a fine job in the first half I thought, but sort of leveled off in the second.”
Lehigh was out shot 26-23 on the afternoon, but scooped up 18 ground balls to the Crusaders 17. The Mountain Hawks also forced 18 turnovers and were four of seven on clear attempts. Kyle Begina recorded eight saves in suffering her first loss of the season, while Holy Cross goal keeper Megan Orr sent back 14 Lehigh shots. MacIntyre led the Brown and White with four ground balls and four draw controls.
Patricia Sutton got the visitors on the board first just 23 seconds into the contest, as she scored an unassisted goal. MacIntyre would tie the game at one with her 24th score of the season at the 24:48 mark, also an unassisted goal. The next 15 minutes were scoreless, until Archambault took a pass from Kelly Winslow and scored, making it 2-1 in favor of the Cruasaders.
Krsitine Corkum and Carolyn Smirti then netted back-to-back goals to put Holy Cross in front 4-1 with 1:16 remaining, but Chamberlain came back with her first score of the day just ten seconds later, pulling Lehigh to within two at 4-2. Winlsow would scored Holy Cross’ fifth goal of the opening half just 15 seconds later however, sending the visitors to a 5-2 halftime lead.
Chamberlain opened the second half with her second score of the game at the 24:46 mark to pull the Mountain Hawks to within two, at 5-3. But from there, Holy Cross scored four unanswered goals, one from Sutton, two from Archambault and another from Smirti to surge ahead 9-3 with 4:10 left. MacIntyre took a feed from Chamberlain and scored goal number 25 on the season, but it was simply too little, too late, as Lehigh dropped its second straight league contest.
Lehigh will get a chance to redeem itself right away, as the Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday afternoon, welcoming Davidson to the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game, which is scheduled to begin at 12:00, will be broadcast live on lehighsports.com with Steve Lomangino and Robbie Aaron.
